Etiquette in the dojo
"Karate begins and ends with courtesy"
Many students know most of the basic dojo etiquette, this guide will list those plus several students may not be aware of. Sensei and Shihan always notice when correct etiquette is and is not used. Proper etiquette is required of all karate students; it especially important that proper etiquette be used by those being evaluated for Shodan testing.
Bowing
Bow position should be with heels touching, weight equal on both feet, elbows even with shoulders. A relaxed bow gives the appearance that the student is unfocused, is showing attitude and is therefore perceived as disrespectful
Always bow to every Black belt you see
Always bow before entering or leaving the dojo.
Bow before and after putting on/taking off obi
Bow to your uki before and after working techniques
Bow before and after each sparring match.
Every time you get a new partner for any exercise, bow.
Every time you're about to switch partners, bow to your old partner before moving on to the next
.
Other etiquette
Shoes are removed before entering the dojo; shoes and all personal belongings are to be kept in the dressing room, not the front lobby.
Don't wear jewelry, watches, etc. Long hair should be tied back.
T-shirts must be tucked in. Wear uniforms properly: very low-slung belts and hakima are a sign of disrespect, disregard of appearance
If you ever need to leave a class early, let the instructor know beforehand.
When instructed to line up, move quickly and quietly into line, in grade order. You must ensure that you are in line with the higher grade (to your right), to stand in front of a senior grade is considered a sign of disrespect.
Concentrate, give spirited kiai, don't talk unnecessarily, and practice hard! (This is under "etiquette" because doing otherwise would be disrespectful to the instructor, as well as to yourself; both of who have bothered to come.)
Whenever you're told to move from one part of the room to another, do it quickly (i.e., run or trot, at least). Also, don't pass in front of anyone -- go behind and around.
Whenever you're asked to stand back or sit back and watch, do so in a normal standing or kneeling position, silently, without leaning on walls or distracting others.
During a session, if you are spoken to by your Sensei, or if you wish to ask the Sensei a question, say "OSS SENSEI". Also say "OSS SENSEI" when your instructor gives an instruction or explains a particular movement to confirm you have heard and understood, or you may reply, yes Sensei, Shodan, etc. Always address your instructor by his or her title.
Most importantly, the moment class begins; your mind should be on karate and on trying to improve your own technique.
Don't make overt displays of how tired you are, no matter how tired you are.
After each class or seminar when you are dismissed say thank you Sensei/Shihan or Domo Arigato this shows respect to your instructor for what they have given you that day. This etiquette is very much appreciated by all instructors.
